FAQs

Why Google Apps for Education?
Vassar currently uses Google Apps for Education for its students, faculty, and staff. Offering Gmail accounts to our alumnae/i just makes sense. Google Apps for Education also allows us to offer a calendaring feature to you.

I just graduated from Vassar. How soon can I create and use an @alum.vassar.edu account?
Sometime in August. Look for an email from the Office of Alumnae/i Affairs and Development, welcoming you to the ranks of Vassar alumnae/i, with information about all alumnae/i benefits, including this one.

I just created my @alum.vassar.edu address in my online community account. How do I get a password?
You will receive an email from alumpostmaster at vassar.edu at your preferred email address (for communications from Vassar) confirming account activation, with a temporary password and link to access your new account. If you cannot find the email (check spam/trash folders), please contact us at oaadweb@vassar.edu. Include your full name (including Vassar last name if different), class year, complete @alum email address, major(s) at Vassar, and current snail mail address.

I've forgotten my password to my @alum.vassar.edu account. How can I retrieve it?
If you have set up a recovery phone number in your @alum.vassar.edu email account, you can retrieve/reset your password yourself. Simply click the "Need help?" link on the Google mail login page. Otherwise, please contact us at oaadweb@vassar.edu, and include your full name (including Vassar last name if different), class year, complete @alum email address, major(s) at Vassar, and current snail mail address. We will send you a temporary password to log in to your account.

Can I forward my mail?
Yes, you can. You even have the option to forward all messages or just specific types of messages. For more information and instructions, please visit: https://support.google.com/mail/answer/10957?hl=en

I’d like my @alum address to be my preferred email for communication from Vassar. Is this possible?
Yes, once your@alum.vassar.edu account has been set up. You can then log into the Online Community and update the "Preferred Contact" section of your account to set your @alum address as your preferred email address.

Can I access my mail using a third party email client program on my computer/mobile device?
Yes, you can, by enabling either POP or IMAP from within your @alum account. For more  information and instructions, please visit: https://support.google.com/mail/troubleshooter/1668960?rd=1

What if I already have a Gmail account?
That’s ok. The Vassar-branded email account will in no way interfere with your existing account. If your email/username is pre-filled with your Gmail address when visiting the Gmail site, click “Sign in with a different account” or "Create Account" at the bottom of the page and log in with the appropriate credentials. If you're logged into your personal Gmail account, click your name in the upper right corner and click "Add Account."

Why can't I change the "Personal Info" section in my @alum account, the same way I can with my personal Gmail account?
Since the @alum email account is owned and managed by Vassar College and is set up using Google Apps for Education, users cannot change the name displayed for their account or set up a recovery email address. For name changes or to reset a forgotten password, please contact us at oaadweb@vassar.edu. Include your full name (including Vassar last name if different), class year, complete @alum email address, major(s) at Vassar, and current snail mail address.
