Vassar @alum Email Address

Every alum with an active account with the online alum directory is entitled to establish a free email address that is affiliated with Vassar. The email address will use the suffix @alum.vassar.edu and is set up as an email account hosted by Google Workspace for Education that can be accessed via the web and Google mail.

ATTENTION NEW GRADS: You will not have access to this feature until mid-August after you graduate. The tab “Alum Email” will appear on your alum directory account profile when this feature is available to you.

No, they are unrelated accounts. Once your @vassar.edu email account expires (on May 1st the year following graduation for the class of 2024, and September 1st the year following graduation for the classes of 2023 and earlier), that data is non-recoverable. You can migrate some content you wish to keep, subject to a maximum 20GB limit on emails and files, to your @alum account using Google Takeout and/or Google Transfer. If you need support regarding your @vassar.edu account, please submit a request to CIS’s Service Desk.

Yes, effective July 1, 2022, there is a maximum limit of 20GB of storage available for emails and files in your account. You can see how much storage you are using when you go to Drive. If you are nearing or over your quota, you will see an alert message and a button to click/tap to free up space.

If you are over quota, you will be unable to upload new files or images or create new files, and your account and all its files will be subject to deletion if you do not reduce your amount of storage. Go to the Google help article for more information on managing and reducing your storage. You can also use Google Takeout to download your data and store it elsewhere. You need to be registered with the Vassar online alum directory. Once registered:

  • log into your account
  • find the Alum Email tab/section on your account profile
  • click the Edit button and follow the instructions

You will receive a confirmation email from alumpostmaster at vassar.edu at your preferred email address for communications from Vassar with a temporary password and link to access your new account. If you cannot find the email (check spam/trash folders), please contact us at advancement@vassar.edu. Include your full name (including Vassar last name if different), class year, complete @alum email address, major(s) at Vassar, and current snail mail address.

If you have set up a recovery email address and/or phone number in your @alum.vassar.edu email account, you can retrieve/reset your password yourself. Simply click the “Need help?” link on the Google mail login page. Otherwise, please contact us at advancement@vassar.edu, and include your full name (including Vassar last name if different), class year, complete @alum email address, major(s) at Vassar, and current snail mail address. We will send you a temporary password to log in to your account.

Yes, you can. You even have the option to forward all messages or just specific types of messages. For more information, go to the Gmail help article on forwarding email messages to another account. If you plan to forward all emails and use another account for replying to those emails, you should set up the forwarding to automatically delete the copy from the @alum.vassar.edu email account to avoid going over your storage limit.
Yes, once your @alum.vassar.edu account has been set up. You can then log into your online alum directory account profile and update the “Preferred Contact” section of your account to set your @alum address as your preferred email address.
Yes, you can, by enabling either POP or IMAP from within your @alum account. For more  information and instructions, go to the Gmail help article on checking email through other email platforms.

Your account, including all files and messages contained therein, may be deleted without any further notice to you in the following circumstances:

  1. If you ask us to delete your account. 
  2. If you start the process of setting up an account but do not complete the setup process and log into the account, we will delete it in July after the end of our fiscal year (June 30th). (Note: This does not preclude you from starting the process again at any time.)
  3. If your account storage remains over the 20GB storage limit for more than three (3) months.

Account deletion permanently removes all email messages, attachments, and other stored files.

Since the @alum email account is owned and managed by Vassar College, users cannot change the name displayed for their account. For name changes, please contact us at advancement@vassar.edu. Include your full name (including Vassar last name if different), class year, complete @alum email address, major(s) at Vassar, and current snail mail address.
